Well, this is a pleasant surprise.  So far, it appears that the Pirates have the Cubs' number, having defeated them in all 4 meetings this year.  Hitting got back on track in a big way, with Cutch going 5 for 5 with a walk and a homer, Garrett Jones going 5 for 6 with a 3-run shot and 5 RBIs, and Ryan Doumit going 2 for 5 with a walk.  Lastings Milledge was walked twice, one of which scored a run.  Aki Iwamura continued his hitless streak, going 0 for 6.  Cutch and GFJ are the first pair of Buccos to have 5+ hits and home runs in the same game in 40 years.

No lead was safe in this game.  Pirates jumped out to a 3-0 in the 1st, only to have that slip away in the bottom of the inning by giving up 4.  They tied the game in the 3rd, only to give up 2 more in the 3rd and 4th.  They managed to tie up the score again by the sixth.  Finally they were able to put the Cubs away in the 8th, scoring 3 off the Gatorade machine-smashing Carlos Zambrano.  Cutch added an insurance homer in the 9th.

All 6 runs the Cubs scored were off Brian Burres, one of which was unearned due to a LaRoche error in the 1st.  Not sure what happened to his fielding brilliance from earlier.  Bullpen was superb again, allowing just 4 hits and 1 walk in six innings as well as 8 Ks, 4 of which were Evan Meek's, who got the win today.  His ERA is a team-best 0.75.

Keep up the good work, boys.  Go for the series win tomorrow.

GAME.
