Sock it to me. BUCS WIN.

Red Sox 4, Pirates 9
Lots of offense in this one. Bowker and Cedeno with homers, doubles by Andy Marte, Pedro, and Jason Jaramillo.

Brad Lincoln gave up the majority of runs in his 3 innings starting, but only two runs allowed isn't that bad. Jeff Karstens got the Win in 2 innings of relief.

Overbay. BUCS LOSE.

Phillies 11, Pirates 4
Lyle Overbay homer.

Ross Ohlendorf and Aaron Thompson had a bad day.

Boston next.

At What Cost? BUCS WIN.

Pirates 8, Rays 7
Center Field was strong in this game as Andrew McCutchen and Corey Wimberly both had 2 hits (2 for 2 and 2 for 3, respectively). Pedro Alvarez and Dusty Brown both had doubles, while John Bowker hit his first home run of the year.

The bad news is that both Cutch (Wrist) and starting pitcher James McDonald (Left Side) were injured during the game and their status is currently unknown. This obviously is not good, as the two players are two of the best players on the Pirates. Hopefully these were minor injuries and their recovery will be quick.

Danny Moskos was awful.

Up next is another 1pm game against the Phils in McKechnie. It will be broadcast on ESPN 970 AM in Pittsburgh.

Never the Twain Shall Meet. BUCS LOSE.

Orioles 11, Pirates 8
Not a good day for Joel Hanrahan, Evan Meek, or Jeff Karstens. Hanrahan had the Blown Save and the Loss.

No one had more than one hit, and Matt Diaz had the Pirates' only extra-base hit, a double, but somehow 8 runs were manufactured. That's encouraging, I guess, except for the pitching.

Next up is a 1pm game at Tampa Bay.

Night Capped. BUCS LOSE.

Pirates 2, Yankees 4
Cutch 2 for 4, Matt Diaz 2 for 2; Doubles for GFJ and Andy Marte.

Kevin Correia had a rough start, getting the Loss going 4 IP with 6 Hits, 3 ER, 3 BB and a homer, but did strike out 4. Charlie Morton gave up 1 homer and 2 Hits in 3 innings. He struck out 2.

Up next is another night game for the Bucs (6-7) in McKechnie against the Orioles (5-5) at 7pm. The game will be broadcast on 104.7 FM.

Wednesday, March 9, 2011

John Lambo. BUCS WIN.

Pirates 5, Twins 2
Andrew Lambo's 9th inning 2-RBI single capped off a huge rally to win a game that was tied at 2 since the 7th. Lyle Overbay had his first homer of the spring. Ronny Cedeno went 2 for 3, but was also caught stealing twice.

Brian Burres is quietly having a strong spring, with 6 IP, 0 ER, and just 3 Hits allowed. He pitched 2 innings in this one allowing no hits or runs. Rudy Owens did not have a great effort in relief, but Fernando Nieve had a bounce-back effort, earning the Win.

Next up is a night game with the Yankees at 7pm today, a game which will be broadcast on 104.7 FM. Pirates are 4-1 on the road in GL play.

Let's Go Bucs.

Under the Gun. BUCS LOSE.

 Rays 4, Pirates 2
Matt Diaz had a homer and was 2 for 3. Neil Walker had a double.

Tyler Yates was awful.

At the Twins tomorrow for a 1pm game.

My Friends Have Lost Their Way. BUCS LOSE.

Blue Jays 5, Pirates 0
Pedro Alvarez.

Bautista still overachieving.

Whatever

Walkerator. BUCS WIN.

Pirates 4, Phillies 3
Neil Walker is a beast. 2-run shot in the 6th broke a 2-2 tie and proved to be the game-winning RBI. Lyle Overbay 3 for 3 with a double. Doumit and Bowker had doubles as well.

Jeff Karstens got the Win, Tony Watson and Sean Gallagher with Holds, Chris Leroux got the Save. Maholm went 3 IP to start allowing 4 hits, 1 ER, and 1 HR along with 2 Ks.

Up next tomorrow is the Blue Jays in McKechnie, a game that will be on the radio and TV(!) at 1pm.

There Was Something in the Air That Night. BUCS LOSE

Phillies 7, Pirates 4
Not a great day for Kevin Correia (3 IP, 5 H, 2 ER, 0 BB, 5 K, 0 HR), but an especially awful day for Fernando Nieve (1.1 IP, 5 H, 4 ER, 1 BB, 3 K, 1 HR). Brian Burres only allowed 1 hit in 2 IP. Danny Moskos had no hits and 1 K in the 9th. Andy Marte went 2 for 3 and had 2 RBIs and a double. Pedro Circiaco and Tony Sanchez also had doubles.

Up next is a rematch with the Phils in Clearwater tomorrow at 1pm.

The Great Stuff. BUCS WIN

Pirates 4, Blue Jays 1

Started out slow. Charlie Morton allowed a run in the 1st, and you thought it was going to be one of those days. But then he settled down and that was the only run for the Jays in the game. Brad Lincoln got the Win and allowed no hits, Yates and Locke with Holds, and Cesar Valdez got the Save. Only 4 Ks total today, but no worries.

Jason Jaramillo went 2 for 2, but the other 7 hits were evenly distributed. 10 Ks for the Bucco bats, so not sure what's going on there. Doubles by Jaramillo, Friday, and Garrett Atkins. Atkins is having a beastly spring; I would love to see him translate that into a comeback summer. Oh yeah, Pedro had a triple. Guess he's not that fat after all.

The Twinning. BUCS LOSE

Twins 4, Pirates 2
Jose Tabata went 3 for 3 and stole a base. 10 Ks by the Bucco pitching staff, 4 by Ross Ohlendorf. Doubles by Lambo, Pedro, and Pearce. Doumit was Doumit, a passed ball that led to a run and 1 for 2. Whatev

Yanks Blanked: BUCS WIN

Yankees 0, Pirates 2
4 hits in total for the Yankees, James MacDonald is still a beast. No-hitter for the Bucs' pitchers after the 4th inning. Chris Snyder went 2 for 2, Pedro Ciriaco and Steve Pearce had doubles; Steve Pearce stole a base. Yeah

Split Squad Split: BUCS WIN/LOSE

Orioles 6, Pirates 4
Pedro went 2 for 3 and Lyle Overbay and Miles "Bull" Durham both had homers, but some some bad pitching by Maholm and especially Justin Wilson (0.2 IP, 1 hit, 3 ER, 3 walks) kept this one out of reach.Durham's homer came in the bottom of the 9th to cut the deficit to 2, but the rally was cut short as Ryan Doumit struck out to end the game. Maholm got the Loss for the Bucs.

Pirates 6, Rays 5
Meanwhile, in Port Charlotte, the rubber match between the Rays and the Bucs was a close one. Despite being outhit by the Rays 10-6, 2 runs off the Rays' 3 errors paved the way to a Bucco victory. No one had more than 1 hit or run scored, but Garrett Atkins drove in 3 after his second homer of the Spring. Fernando Nieve looked shaky, allowing 3 runs, but the rest of the pitching staff was solid, allowing no more than 1 run apiece. Rudy Owens got the Win, as well as a Blown Save. Sean Gallagher got the Save in the 9th.

Weekend Grapefruit League recaps

Here's what's been happening for the Pirates in Grapefruit League action so far.

I'm right in the middle of midterms, so I apologize for lack of updates.

Friday, February 25, 2011 - Manatees 1, Pirates 21
Determined not to lose to the small Bradenton-based community college as they did two years ago, the Pirates dominated the Sea Cows. Steve Pearce was the player of the game, going 2 for 2, scoring 3 runs and 4 RBIs. Brian Friday and Garrett Atkins had home runs. Tyler Yates was the only Bucco pitcher to allow a run and the only pitcher for the Pirates to allow more than 1 hit. Aaron Thompson got the Win.

Saturday, February 26, 2011 - Pirates 5, Rays 9
After the previous day's drubbing of the Manatees, the Pirates came back down to earth, scoring 5 runs but giving up nearly twice that. Scoring was spread even among the Bucs, with no one have more than 1 hit, 1 run, or 1 RBI. Charlie Morton was solid in 2 IP, with 1 hit, 1 walk, and no runs allowed. Justin Thomas allowed 4 runs in 0.2 IP and basically iced the game away for the Pirates.

Sunday, February 27, 2011 - Rays 3, Pirates 10
Back at home in McKechnie Field, the Pirates turned it around against the Rays to even their Grapfruit League record to 1-1. Kevin Correia was shaky at the start, allowing 2 runs, 2 hits and 2 walks in just 1.1 innings, but the rest of the Bucco pitching corps got the job done, allowing only 1 more run all game (Chris Leroux). On the other side, it was the Andrew McCutchen show. The speedy center fielder went 3 for 3, scored 3 runs, 2 RBIs, a double, a home run, and stole a base. Garrett Jones also had a nice day going 3 for 3, and Jason Jaramillo also homered.

Up next, the Pirates complete the 3-game series with the Rays on the road in Port Charlotte and a split squad in McKechnie to take on Baltimore.

Joel Hanrahan Named Closer

Reports are coming in that Joel Hanrahan has been named as the Pirates closer for 2011. It was down to him and Evan Meek, and CH13 decided to go with Hanrahan. Personally, I feel that Meek's numbers last year were a bit fluky, but he still would have made a good closer. Either one would have worked well for the Pirates though, so I don't have a problem with this decision. Apparently, some TBD Slipknot song will be his entrance music.

RIP Chuck Tanner

One of the greatest men to ever manage the Pittsburgh Pirates was lost on Friday. Chuck Tanner, the man behind the Fam-a-lee, passed away after battling a long illness in New Castle, PA.

He amassed a record of 1352-1381 over his 18-year career as a manager. He will most be remembered in Pirateland, however, for his tenure as the Pirates' skipper from 1977-1985, leading them to their most recent World Series victory in 1979, as well as being a senior advisor to Huntington from 2007 until his death.

 He will be deeply missed.
